Compared with the case of using a light reflecting film, the brightness of the screen can be increased by 5% or more when packaged in a television set.


Furukawa Electric said that the backlight source of LCD TVs is accelerating the conversion from CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tube) to LED. Moreover, the LED backlight method is transitioning from the original direct-down mode to an edge-emitting method that is expected to reduce the number of LEDs, reduce weight, and reduce thickness. Furukawa Electric predicts that 70% of LCD TVs in the global market in 2015 will be equipped with edge-lit LED backlights.

For reasons of cost, the light reflecting film is the mainstream of the reflective material for the direct type LED backlight. However, in order to realize the uniformity of the brightness of the screen, it is necessary to suppress the unevenness of the reflection, and the reflective material is required to have rigidity and heat resistance capable of withstanding the heat of the LED light source. The light reflecting film achieves the required rigidity and heat resistance by lamination, but this causes an increase in cost. In addition, in order to reduce the number of high-priced LEDs relative to the CCFL, higher reflection performance is required.


Improve manufacturing methods and reduce uneven brightness.


In view of the above situation, Furukawa Electric developed a reflective material for LED edge light-emitting using a high-rigidity MCPET manufacturing method by improving the straight-down method to achieve a higher brightness than the light-reflecting film.


This new MCPET maintains the same reflective properties as existing MCPET while also suppressing uneven brightness. As a result, the number of LEDs as a light source can be reduced, and it is expected that the product will be used in the One Edge mode (the way in which the light source is arranged on the screen side) and the Two Edge mode (the light source is arranged on the top or bottom of the screen). Way).


In addition, the development of the new MCPET product is part of the company's medium-term plan "New Frontier 2012" (announced on April 8, 2010) to strengthen the high-performance materials business. According to Furukawa Electric, in the future, the company will position the light-reflecting panel for edge-emitting LED backlights to be one of the main businesses to strengthen sales.
